Book: Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O'Connell
Target audience: 2 and up
Topic: Halloween, counting
Basic summary: The ghosts living in a house get scared away by a witch then rally to get their house back
I got this book in a bundle from a Scholastic Book Sale a couple of years ago. Even though the other two books I got weren't winners, this book more than made up for it. When we unpacked it from the Halloween box this weekend, my son said, "Oh boy! I love this book." I then ended up reading it three times. In a row.
The set-up is simple. Ten ghosts live in a house. A witch tries to scare them all away so she can live in it instead. The fun comes from the witch and her attempts to frighten the ghosts away using classic Halloween tricks. She dresses up (poorly) as a vampire. She hangs a bat from the staircase. She sews a black cat and leaves it on a bedside table. For younger kids, the story is enough to keep them entertained. For older kids, it's fun to try to find the hidden witch on each page, and the evidence that the scary thing isn't real. Kids can also try to find the ghosts that are hiding as the story counts down from ten ghosts down to the final one left.
We got our October Scholastic Book packet from school today and guess what? This book is featured in Firefly's "Happy Halloween Pack". Interested in making a Scholastic order? Here are some tips I found a few weeks ago here.
